Temporary Housing Assistance

The Schenectady County Department of Social Services is available to assist people and families needing temporary housing. Temporary housing assistance may be available to people and families experiencing homelessness and in need of help because of the following situations:

Domestic Violence

Code Order to Vacate

Eviction

Are you experiencing Domestic Violence?

If you need immediate assistance or are experiencing an emergency, call for help.

Call 1-800-942-6906 for information about emergency shelter, support groups, counseling, and your legal rights

Eligibility

People and families must meet income requirements to receive temporary housing assistance. These guidelines were created by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) in New York State.

If you are applying for Temporary Housing Assistance you must work with the Department of Social Services to verify the following information: 

  • Income
  • Resources
  • Lack of alternative housing options

Responsibilities of  Applicants for Temporary Housing Assistance

  • Complete the Temporary Housing Assessment
  • Verify necessary information - including the reason for housing
  • Ongoing responsibility to seek permanent housing
  • An obligation to accept available permanent housing found by the Department of Social Services
  • Paying for temporary housing if you have the income and resources
