Special Investigation Unit

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigates all reported allegations of actual or suspected benefit fraud in the following program areas: 

  • Temporary Assistance (TA)
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps)
  • Medicaid (MA)
  • Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
  • Day Care programs (recriptients and providers)

The Special Investigations Unit also investigates cases involving SNAP trafficking, where individuals redeem benefits for cash, sell their benefits, or buy food with their benefits and resell the food to other retailers.

How to Report Other Forms of Benefit Fraud?

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) does not investigate allegations of fraud in the following program areas. These allegations are referred to the parent federal/state agencies responsible for these programs:

  • Social Security including SSI and SSD fraud
  • Workman’s Compensation
  • Unemployment Insurance Fraud
