Members of the Schenectady County Legislature, Schenectady Youth Hockey Association, and representatives from the Wemple family gathered earlier today to unveil and dedicate the newly expanded and renovated Schenectady County Ray Wemple Memorial Rink, located at the County Airport in the Town of Glenville.

"We are excited to officially unveil the expanded and renovated Schenectady County Ray Wemple Memorial Rink,” said Gary Hughes, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature. “This updated facility reflects our commitment to providing top-notch spaces for our community to come together and create lasting memories. With enhanced amenities and a more welcoming environment, we’re proud to offer this modern facility to families, teams, and visitors for years to come. Along with the new Mohawk Harbor Arena, NY Ovals Cricket facility, New York Phoenix basketball team, and the Aquatics Center at SUNY Schenectady, this rink will help establish Schenectady County as a premier sports tourism destination, boosting the local economy and enhancing our community.”

The renovation includes the addition of over 4,000 square feet, with four new locker rooms, an additional changing room, expanded restroom facilities, a larger front entrance, a modernized exterior façade, a new activities room, and approximately 30 additional parking spaces. As part of the renovation, the facility was renamed to honor Ray Wemple's legacy.

Ray Wemple was a dedicated member of the Schenectady County community, serving in various roles including at the Schenectady Police Department, Carman Volunteer Fire Department, and as the Schenectady County Emergency 9-1-1 Director. He was also dedicated to the Schenectady Youth Hockey Association, where he affected the lives of countless young athletes and their families, leaving behind a lasting legacy of mentorship and community spirit.

The rink currently supports more than a dozen Schenectady Youth Hockey Association teams, several adult hockey leagues, and two high school teams, hosting hundreds of games each year. In addition to hockey, the rink offers a variety of programs, from ice skating and learn-to-skate programs to introductory hockey classes.
