Schenectady County to Honor U.S. Army Veteran John J. Gorman, M.D.

Schenectady County will hold an Honor-A-Veteran ceremony on Saturday, December 7, 2024 to recognize U.S. Army veterans John J. Gorman, M.D. Members of the public are invited to attend.

The Honor-A-Veteran program is a collaboration between Schenectady County’s Veterans Service Agency and the County’s Honor-A-Veteran Committee to honor veterans who were either born in or currently reside in Schenectady County. Members of the committee are from various veteran organizations throughout the County.

“Our Honor-A-Veteran events are a chance to not only recognize the service and sacrifices of our veterans, but also to show our appreciation and raise awareness for all veterans and their families,” said Schenectady County Legislator Holly Vellano, Chair of the Military Affairs & Veterans Committee. “We encourage the public to join us in honoring these brave individuals and to nominate veterans who have made a difference in our community.”

John J. Gorman, M.D.
Born in Syracuse, New York, and a graduate of Draper High School in Rotterdam, Dr. John J. Gorman enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 23, 1952. He served honorably until his separation as a Corporal on September 3, 1954. During that time, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Research Lab at Ft. Knox, Kentucky in the Radiation Division – Radiobiology.
While in the service he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
John graduated from Union College in 1950 with a B.S. in Biology, earned a master’s degree in Biology and Chemistry, and a teaching certificate from New York State College for Teachers in Albany before being accepted into medical school. He attended State University of New York Medical School after serving in the military, graduating in 1958.

During his civilian career, he worked as a Radiologist and Associate Professor of Radiology at Albany Medical Center. He also had a long and distinguished career at St. Clare’s Hospital in the X-Ray Department and served at Chief of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging before retiring in 1997.
