Schenectady County Board of Elections Reminds Voters to Plan their Vote

Schenectady County Board of Elections Update

Early Voting for the 2023 General Election Begins on Saturday

New in 2023: Eligible Residents Can Register to Vote Up Until Saturday, October 28

The Schenectady County Board of Elections (SCBOE) would like to remind voters that they can vote in-person before General Election Day at designated voting sites in Schenectady County. Early Voting for the General Election will begin Saturday, October 28, 2023 and run through Sunday, November 5, 2023.

Early Voting is the same as voting on Election Day. When you arrive at an Early Voting location, you will check in, receive a ballot, and vote. Instructions will be available at the Early Voting sites, and sample ballots are available at www.voteschenectady.com. If you vote during the Early voting period, you are not eligible to vote on Election Day, which is November 7, 2023.

SCBOE is partnering with CDTA to provide additional transportation options to connect the community with the Hon. Karen B. Johnson Library early voting site.

“Early Voting is a convenient way for residents to vote before Election Day, when lines tend to be longer,” said Board of Elections Commissioners Laura Fronk and Darlene Harris. “Registered Schenectady County voters are able to cast their ballot at any of the four designated Early Voting polling sites located throughout the county, when it’s most convenient for them.”

All eligible voters can vote at any of the early voting locations within the County. In Schenectady County, Early Voting locations are:

Hon. Karen B. Johnson Library                                                     Glenville Senior Center

Central Branch, 99 Clinton Street                                                 32 Worden Road

General Election Day is Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Polling sites will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Trolley Transportation

CDTA is offering trolley service to the Hon. Karen B. Johnson Library to make all early voting sites easily accessible by bus. A trolley will circulate to the bus stops along Union Street, Nott Terrace, State Street and Clinton Street for drop-off at the library. This service will run from Saturday, October 28 through Sunday, November 5. Trolley hours will be Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Voter Registration

Last month Governor Hochul signed a bill into law that extends the voter registration deadline. Previously voters had to be registered to vote at least 25 days prior to an election. Now, voters only have to be registered at least 10 days prior to the election, making October 28 the new registration deadline for the upcoming General Election. This means that on October 28 eligible residents will be able to register and vote on the same day.

All voter registration applications must pass an audit process before being added to the County’s voter roles as an active voter. If a resident wishes to register to vote on the last day, then goes to an Early Voting poll site to cast a ballot, they will be given an affidavit ballot, which does not go through the voting machine. Once the application passes audit, the affidavit ballot will be opened and hand-canvassed at the Board of Elections.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee ballot applications are available on www.voteschenectady.com under Vote Absentee and may be submitted in-person at 2696 Hamburg Street until November 6, 2023. Absentee Ballot Drop Boxes will be available at every Early Voting and Election Day Poll Site and at the Board of Elections office, during operational hours.

The Board of Elections has extended hours for in person voting at 2696 Hamburg Street:

Monday, October 23, 2023 – 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, October 25, 2023 – 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
