On July 5, 2022, Eric Evans, a resident of Schenectady, pled guilty to one count of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree. As part of the plea, Mr. Evans admitted to touching the vagina of a child under 11 years old who was known to him.
The above plea took in full satisfaction a four-count indictment charging the Defendant with 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree for subjecting the victim to sexual contact on three separate dates, as well as one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The investigation began after the child disclosed to a school social worker in Rotterdam. At that time, the school social worker informed the police of their findings. The case was originally investigated by Det. Michelle Crandall of the Rotterdam Police Department until it was established that the abuse took place in Schenectady. At that point, Schenectady Youth Aid Bureau Detective Kevin Derkowski investigated with the help of Schenectady County Child Protective Services. The victim was interviewed at the Schenectady Child Advocacy Center where she disclosed the sexual assaults.
Mr. Evans will be placed on 10 years of probation and will be required to register as a sex offender. A full stay away order of protection was issued for the victim in the case. The plea was taken by Judge Matthew J. Sypniewski in Schenectady County Court. The People are represented by Assistant District Attorney Maria Apruzzese. The Defendant is represented by Mark Juda.
