Schenectady County announced the new winter hours for the Hon. Karen B. Johnson (Central) Library and 8 branch libraries, which will begin on January 2, 2022. The Scotia branch library is currently closed for renovations.
“Families and residents are utilizing library services more than ever as the pandemic continues to affect how we live, learn and work,” said Schenectady County Legislator Cathy Gatta, Vice-Chair of the Education and Libraries Committee. “From youth and adult programing to computer access and serving as meeting places for local groups, our community branches have become much more than just a place to read or borrow books.”

Library patrons are required to wear a mask, maintain physical distancing, and comply with all County procedures, which may include having their temperature taken and signing in for the purpose of contact tracing.

Programming Highlights – January 2022
Youth Winter Reading Challenge – Read for a Better World, January 1-31 for ages 0-18 years old
Spending as little as 20 minutes a day reading can impact school success and long-term learning. This year’s challenge is to spend 600 minutes (or 10 hours total) reading or being read to during the month of January. Each young reader that completes the challenge will win a prize, to make the world a better place, and be entered to win raffle prizes. Participants are encouraged to use the Beanstack app to track their progress online. Paper reading logs are also available at all branch libraries. Visit www.scpl.org to register.
Adult Winter Reading Challenge – Read for a Better World, January 1-31 for ages 19+
SCPL is kicking off its 5th annual Winter Reading Challenge on January 1. This year we challenge you to Read for a Better World by reflecting on your own identify, the world you live in, and how you can act for a more just world.
