Extension Would Allow County to Move Forward on New Addition
The Schenectady County Legislature passed a resolution through committee aimed at amending the lease agreement between Schenectady County, Schenectady County Public Library and the Village of Scotia. The resolution authorizes the extension of the lease term for the historic Glen House, which houses the Scotia Branch Library, through December 31, 2070. The resolution will be considered for approval by the County Legislature on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, during their regular meeting.
The current 99-year lease ends on December 31, 2047. The proposed 23 year lease extension allows for the construction of an addition to increase the space and functionality of the historic building. The 850 square foot addition will provide meeting space and handicapped accessible restrooms designed to keep with the building’s historic status.
“Our libraries have always been an important resource for the community, and that has continued during the pandemic,” said Schenectady County Legislator Peggy King, Chair of the Education & Libraries Committee. “Extending the lease agreement will allow the County to make our Scotia Branch Library more accessible to residents and families who rely on the services our libraries provide – from books and digital content, to kids and adult programing.”
Previous Renovations
Phase 1 of the Scotia Branch Library renovations included historic renovation to repair and stabilize the building, and included the replacement of the slate roof, repair or replacement of specific sections of wood siding, restoration of wood windows and the chimney, exterior painting and installation of stone drainage around the exterior of the building. A historic renovation architect recommended the repairs, which were done in compliance with historic renovation standards.
