Applications for Job Seekers Open Until April 12

Schenectady County is now accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Applicants must be 14-24 years old by the start of the program and be a resident of Schenectady County. Funding for the program comes from grants, New York State and Federal government, a majority of which is allocated to youth whose family receives TANF, SNAP, or whose total household income does not exceed 200% of the federal poverty level.

SYEP is a unique opportunity for youth to gain 6 weeks of meaningful, on-the-job training during the summer. Youth selected to participate in the program will be assigned a worksite and are able to work for 20 hours per week and earn $15 per hour through Schenectady County Connects (Schenectady County Job Training Agency). The program runs July 8 – August 16, 2024.

“The Summer Youth Employment program offers young people the chance to earn money while gaining important skills and experiences,” said Schenectady County Legislator Omar McGill, Chair of the Workforce Development Committee. “This program invests in our youth, helping to shape their future and giving them the tools they need to succeed.”

Program Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a Schenectady County resident;
  • Be age 14-24 by the start of the program (July 8, 2024); and
  • Provide required documentation/information listed on the application.

If more applications are received by the deadline than are able to be served, a lottery will be held to determine which applicants are selected to participate. Priority may be given to youth who have participated in the program for fewer than 3 years.
