Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino has launched the Blue Envelope Program, an important safety initiative aimed at assisting drivers with autism and other similar conditions. The program is designed to foster safer interactions between law enforcement and individuals who may experience unique challenges while on the road.
A driver with autism may have physical movements or verbal responses during a traffic stop that are beyond their control. The Blue Envelope Program provides clear, simple notification to responding Sheriff's Deputies, helping them adjust their actions and responses to better accommodate the situation.
What is the Blue Envelope?
The Blue Envelope is a simple, discreet envelope where drivers can store their registration, insurance card, and other documents typically requested during a traffic stop. It contains clear printed instructions for the driver and important information for the Sheriff’s Deputy. Additionally, the envelope provides the Sheriff's Deputy with an emergency contact.
Drivers can pick up a Blue Envelope at the Schenectady County Sheriff's Substation located at 130 Princetown Plaza in Princetown, NY. YOu may also contact Sergeant Jeffrey Iovinelli at Jeffrey.Iovinelli@SchenectadyCountyNY.gov.
The program is free and is part of a statewide initiative by the New York State Sheriff's Association.
