Police Reform and Community Collaboration

The Schenectady County Sheriff's Office held a series of community meetings to review and improve police strategies, policies, procedures and practices, in accordance with NYS Governor Cuomo's Executive Order #203.

The meetings were structured as panel discussions to gain input from local organizations and stakeholders, including: 

Community groups; Faith-based organizations;  Business leaders; Public safety officials; and Social service organizations.

The virtual community meetings were moderated by the Sheriff's Office and streamed live on https://www.youtube.com/SchenectadyCounty.

The Schenectady County Sheriff's Office has participated in meetings held by other local police departments, including the City of Schenectady and the towns of Rotterdam and Niskayuna. The Sheriff's Office primarily patrols the towns of Princetown and Duanesburg.

Topics explored include: use of force policies, procedural justice, systemic racial bias, de-escalation training and practices, community-based outreach, and Sheriff's Office accessibility and transparency.
